2009 BMW 335xi makeover

This customer had just bought their 2009 BMW 335xi and brought it to me to get freshened up. It was in need of some serious care however, as the normally beautiful black paint was covered in swirls, spiderweb scratches, and water spots. The customer opted for a custom detail which was to safely remove as much of swirls and water spots as possible, then follow it up with some long lasting and eye popping paint protection.

The first step was to get the vehicle good and clean. The 2 bucket wash method was used along with Grit Guards, Chemical Guys Citrus Wash, and Sheepskin wash mitts. Purpose made microfiber waffle weave drying towels were used to dry the car. Once the car was clean, we could clearly see the extensive paint damage in the form of swirls and water spots. Using proper wash products and techniques is the first step to avoiding paint damage as seen in the picture to the right!

After the wash was completed, detailing clay in conjunction with clay lubricant, was used to remove surface contamination and road grime that is too stubborn to come off during the wash process. This step is critical prior to polishing or compounding which is what is used to remove the swirls and water spots. As you can see from the picture, a lot of contamination was removed and the paint looked noticeably better after claying.

A multi-step compounding and polishing process was performed in order to remove as much of the paint defects as possible. The very safe, yet very capable, Portal Cable 7424XP random orbital polisher was used to tackle this job. As you can see from the picture on the right, the compounding and polishing processes proved to be very effective! Look at how clear and clean the polished side is compared to the still scratched and swirled side, wow!

The paint was looking great after polishing so it was now time to enhance and protect the finish. First, Chemical Guys EZ-Creme Glaze was layered onto the paint to add extra gloss. That was followed up with Blackfire Wet Diamond paint sealant and Collinite 845 carnuba wax to bring the protection and shine to the next level. We could not have been happier with the turn around on this car, and the customer was taken away by how much gloss and shine could be seen in this black paint!
