I recently had the pleasure of working on a customers 2012 Mercedes AMG C63 Black Series sports car. The car looks amazing and sports a 6.3 liter V8 engine that roars when it is fired up! The aggressive styling and luxurious interior are a joy to the eyes, and I just can’t get enough of this car 🙂 Ok, on to the reason I was called in! The exterior of the car was very dirty (inside was mildly dirty) and had lots of contamination built up as well as brake dust covering the wheels and brakes. The customer wanted the car thoroughly cleaned up and finished with a high gloss and shine finish. I put together a custom detail package that included a hand wash, ultra paint decontamination, paint cleansing polishing, and a multi-layered application of glaze, paint sealant, and carnauba wax. In addition, we added a Level 1 Interior detail to clean up the inside of the car.
I almost always start off by cleaning the interior of the car. This Mercedes has a number of different materials on the inside so choosing the right products for cleaning and protecting were key. In addition to the usual dust and dirt, we had some pet hair to deal with. Cleaning pet hair out of carpet and upholstery is can be tedious, fortunately this car was not too bad. Once cleaned, the interior was dressed and protected with 303 Aerospace Protectant. Check out the before and after pictures below!
Once the interior was completed, the car was taken outside to start the thorough wash process. I started off with the wheels, which are normally black in color, but instead covered in large amounts of brake dust and dirt, making them look brown. Some P21S Total Auto Wash wash sprayed liberally over the wheels and tire face and let to soak in for a few minutes to help break down the dirt and grime. Various brushes and wheel cleaning tools were used to get these rims back in to respectable condition. The finished wheel is on the right obviously, the turnaround was quite dramatic!
After the wheels were cleaned, the rest of the car was carefully washed using the standard 2 bucket wash method with sheepskin wash mitts and Chemical Guys Citrus Wash. With the surface of the vehicle now clean, I could perform my “ultra paint decontamination” process which included a bath in CarPro Iron X, followed by a clay bar treatment. The Iron X is used to dissolve embedded iron deposits while the clay bar assures that no road grime or airborne contaminants are left on the paint surface. The last step in preparing the paint for the finishing layers, was to machine polish the paint using the Pinnacle Black Label surface cleansing polish. This non-abrasive, water based cleansing polish, cleans the paint surface of any remaining embedded dirt or grime as well as old polish or cleaning oils. A surface free of oil and contamination is critical before applying the finishing layers, so they can bond to the paint properly. The pictures below display the condition of the paint before cleaning, as well as some pictures of the decontamination and cleansing process.
At this point, I was ready to apply the gloss enhancing glaze and the Blackfire Wet Diamond paint sealant. The paint sealant was allowed to cure for a day before I applied the final layer, Collinite 845 Insulator Wax. Applying the layers in this order is a technique I use to create maximum shine, gloss, and depth to the paint, while providing excellent protection at the same time. Once the wax was removed and buffed to a high gloss, I was able to do the final touch-ups which included polishing of the chrome exhaust tips and black trim pieces. In the end, the Mercedes AMG C63 Black Series was looking better than ever, and fully prepared to turn heads once spring time comes around! Below you can see some of the final processes and the car after the detail job was complete.
